Buying a British Shorthair in The Woodlands

Something worth flagging for Woodlands buyers specifically, because we get asked about it constantly: British Longhairs. The longhair variety is not a separate import. It's the same breed carrying the long-coat gene, and it produces a semi-long silky coat that needs a comb through it a couple of times a week and not much else. If you loved the look of a Persian but not the grooming commitment or the flat-faced breathing problems, the British Longhair is very often the cat you actually wanted.

We breed both, out of the same lines, so you can meet a shorthair and a longhair side by side in the same room and decide with your hands rather than from photos.

How much grooming does a British Longhair actually need?

A comb-through two or three times a week, and a bit more during a seasonal coat change. The texture is silky rather than woolly, so it doesn't mat the way a poorly-bred long coat does, but it isn't a no-maintenance cat either, and we'd rather you knew that before you took one home.

Questions from The Woodlands buyers

How much grooming does a British Longhair actually need?

A comb-through two or three times a week, and a bit more during a seasonal coat change. The texture is silky rather than woolly, so it doesn't mat the way a poorly-bred long coat does, but it isn't a no-maintenance cat either, and we'd rather you knew that before you took one home.

How do I reserve a British Shorthair kitten?

Fill in the reservation form on this site and you'll immediately get a customer number on screen: something like BGC-2607-4H2K. Canan then calls or emails you within 24 hours to talk through which kitten suits your household. If it's a good fit, a $500 deposit holds that specific kitten and the balance is due when it goes home. You do not need Instagram or any social media account to reserve; phone and email work perfectly well.

How much do your kittens cost?

Pet kittens generally run between $2,200 and $4,500 depending on color, coat and quality. Traditional blues sit at the lower end; golden shaded and golden chinchilla, especially in British Longhair, sit at the top. Every listed kitten shows its own price. Breeding rights are priced separately and are only ever sold to established, registered catteries.

What health testing do the parents have?

Every breeding cat is FIV and FeLV negative, screened for HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most significant heart condition in the breed), and PKD tested where the line calls for it. They also have regular veterinary examinations. Ask and we will email you the actual results for a specific kitten's sire and dam before you pay anything.

How old are kittens when they go home?

Twelve to fourteen weeks, never earlier. Kittens taken from their mother and littermates at eight weeks miss a critical stretch of social learning and are measurably more likely to develop biting, litter box and anxiety problems. Any breeder offering you an eight-week-old British Shorthair is cutting a corner at your cat's expense.

Do you deliver, and how far?

Pickup in Houston is free. Ground delivery by car covers all of Texas. Canan drives the kitten herself rather than using a courier. For the rest of the United States your kitten flies in-cabin with a professional pet nanny and is handed to you at your arrival gate. We do not ship cats in cargo.
