In her own words
My name is Canan Dedeler, and I am a professional cat breeder with more than 20 years of experience dedicated to preserving and improving the British Shorthair and British Longhair breeds. My journey in the cat world began with a deep love and admiration for these exceptional breeds. Over the years, I have worked with some of the finest bloodlines from Europe and have focused my breeding program on outstanding health, excellent temperament, strong genetics, and the true traditional breed standard.
I believe responsible breeding is not only about producing beautiful cats, but also about protecting the future of the breed. Every kitten born in my cattery receives individual attention, proper socialization, the highest standards of care, and a loving environment from the very beginning of life.
My cattery is based in Houston, Texas, and I proudly work with international bloodlines and follow ethical breeding practices. Throughout my career, I have had the honor of placing both beloved pet kittens and exceptional breeding cats with responsible families and reputable breeders in many different countries around the world.
My goal is to raise healthy, well-balanced, affectionate British Shorthair and British Longhair cats that become cherished members of their families around the world. For me, breeding is not simply a profession. It is a lifelong passion, a commitment to quality, and a dedication to these magnificent cats.
How we breed
Six things we won't compromise on
Some of these cost us money. That's rather the point of them.
Health before everything
Every breeding cat is FIV and FeLV negative and under regular veterinary care. Genetic and cardiac testing such as PKD and HCM is done where a line calls for it. Ask about a specific kitten's mother and father and we'll tell you precisely what has been done for those two cats, and send you the records, before you pay a cent.
Temperament is bred, then taught
A calm cat starts with calm parents and is finished by how it's raised. Our kittens grow up in the middle of a family home with the vacuum, the doorbell, children and visitors, not in a quiet room away from the noise.
Type and color are chosen, not hoped for
Modern, baby face, bear face and classic each ask for different pairings, and the lilac and pink coats took years of decisions to arrive at. Canan pairs for a specific result, using both parents' type, color and pedigree plus what every previous litter taught her. Rare cats are not luck.
The kitten decides when it's ready
Kittens go home between eight and twelve weeks, and Canan sets each date herself on how that kitten is nursing and how its growth is coming along. A kitten still leaning on its mother stays, whatever the calendar says and however much a buyer would prefer otherwise. Twenty years of litters is what makes that judgement better than a rule.
Placement, not sales
We ask about your household, your other animals and your plans, and we have said no before. If you can ever no longer keep your cat, it comes back to us rather than going to a shelter, for its whole life.
Support that doesn't expire
Families who bought kittens years ago still text Canan about food, litter and behaviour. That's the arrangement. She'd rather hear from you at nine at night than have you worry.
Health program
What we test for, and why
All breeding cats in my program undergo regular veterinary health checks and are selected based on overall health, temperament, and genetic quality. Health testing includes screening for FIV and FeLV, as well as genetic and cardiac evaluations such as HCM screening. Where applicable, PKD testing is also performed to ensure healthy breeding lines. My priority is to maintain strong, healthy British Shorthair and British Longhair lines, with a focus on responsible and ethical breeding practices.
HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)
The most significant inherited heart condition in the breed. It thickens the heart muscle and often gives no warning before it becomes serious. Screening breeding cats by cardiac ultrasound is the only meaningful way to reduce it, and it has to be repeated as a cat ages rather than done once and forgotten.
PKD (polycystic kidney disease)
A genetic condition that entered British lines historically through Persian outcrosses. Unlike HCM it has a straightforward DNA test. We test where the line calls for it rather than running it on every cat on a fixed schedule, so PKD paperwork is something we provide on request for a specific mother and father, not something issued automatically with every kitten. Ask and you will get a straight answer about what exists for the two cats behind your kitten.
FIV & FeLV
Feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukaemia virus are infectious rather than inherited, and every cat in our program is negative. Any cat entering the cattery is tested and isolated before it meets the others.

Archie is now Canan Dedeler Archie. He was bred by the Kodzha Land cattery and transferred to Canan, so the original certificate still shows the breeder's prefix and their name as owner of record. His is the show title in the program; the queens and kings behind our litters all come from European champion lines.
